My first encounter with pottery was during the late 70’s when I took lessons at the Kraft Studio in Pretoria and was taught by Anton Smit.  Later I moved to Cape Town and met Graham Bolland. Through his teaching and influence I made high temperature gas reduction fired pottery.

I left pottery for about 30 years but over the last few years I have been back at making pots on our small farm outside Paarl. I am now experimenting with mid-temperature reduction fired stoneware, using simple glazes made from basic glaze ingredients including silica, feldspars and clay.  I have incorporated ash from the farmhouse fireplace as well as olive wood ash from burning the branches removed during pruning in the orchard.

Since 2023 I have been lucky enough to exhibit at the Ceramics SA Regional exhibitions and CWC annual exhibition. My work was also included in the 2024 Corobrik National Ceramic Biennale. In 2024 I was awarded the Premier Second Merit prize for functional studio pottery and the work was subsequently acquired by the Clay Museum at Rust en Vrede in Durbanville, where it is on permanent exhibition.
